I really liked this point "One reason is to help families and society to become more caring."
I definitely agree. I worked with adults who have mental and physical disabilities. Throughout my time in this field God taught me patient, love, compassion and to be able to understand others, though I believe I only experienced the tip of the iceberg. Being a parent would be totally different.

Through all things I believe God works to allow us to become the people we were designed to be which definitely includes parenting children with autism or any other disability.

Thanks for sharing.

I just talked to the parent of an autistic child. She seems to have trouble understanding what he is trying to say. It's wierd how each case of Autism is different.

As the father of an autistic child, I have long wondered why the rates of autism have risen so dramatically over the last generation. Science has not yet produced an explanation. Perhaps someday it will. Regardless, I have found it very interesting that this condition (which is still a great mystery), mental illnesses and learning disabilities have rapidly increased at precisely the same time that medical science has made so many advances in treating physical iconditions like cancer and infectious diseases. As soon at the western world solves one set of problems, another set of problems mysteriously appears. Theologically, one can say that this is all Adam's fault, a consequence of living in a fallen world. But God still loves us, and these are also ultimately an expression of God's love. I thinl James is right. I think that God may have allowed an increase in autism so that, in this increasingly rich and self-centered time, families and society will be continually forced to re-evaluate their priorities and express real love by taking care of the weaker ones among us. It's part of God's design to make us into better, more compassionate people.

Nice! I like your last statement a lot. Everything in our lives consists of sacrifice, whether it's our precious money, our priceless time, or something else. "They learn that real love involves costly sacrifice." Real love for Christ, the One we owe everything to, just costs that much more.
